The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army established the Pathway of Hope initiative in Buffalo in 2017 to provide targeted services to families wanting to break the generational cycle of poverty.  The Chur Family Foundation's support of this program, that is rooted in a case management approach, focusing on the client’s individual needs and proficiency in life skills, has made a significant difference for families. Pathway of Hope is a comprehensive community approach aimed at delivering a high impact solution to the instability and crisis of poverty. The program builds upon, leverages, and coordinates The Salvation Army’s existing community networks and relationships, and leads new collaborative efforts to marshal needed resources to help vulnerable families and fill critical community service gaps.

Mercy Care For The Adirondacks

Mission and Programs Established in 2007 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Mercy Care for the Adirondacks is sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy Institute of the Americas. Its mission is inspired by love of God and love of neighbor to enhance the fullness of life of elders living in their community.

The Sisters arrived in the Adirondacks in 1895 to establish Sanatorium Gabriels to treat tubercular patients. They have provided loving care to elders and infirm ever since. When the Sisters determined there was a new need not being met adequately, they established Mercy Care for the Adirondacks to help relieve the isolation and loneliness many elders were experiencing.

Mercy Care pursues and implements its mission through three interrelated strategies:

  • Direct Service to Elders. Mercy Care serves any older adult in need within its capacity by providing informal social care supports given by Friendship Volunteers, Parish Nurse Volunteers, and Spiritual Care Companion Volunteers. • Community Empowerment. Mercy Care seeks to encourage each community to develop facilities, programs, policies, and practices that help our communities to become more age friendly.
  • Education. Through education, Mercy Care seeks to promote an understanding of issues and challenges in the lives of elders and of the impact on elders of the policies and practices of communities, the state, and the nation.

Hearts And Hands

Hearts and Hands: Faith in Action has been a grateful recipient of support from the Chur Foundation since 2018. Our organization provides free volunteer-delivered transportation, in-house support and companionship to older adults and those with disabilities in Erie and Eastern Niagara Counties. The generous support of the Foundation has allowed us to increase our services to care receivers, fund staffing to expand our reach into new areas, and recruit additional volunteers through background check and mileage reimbursement subsidies – among many other positive impacts. As a result, our organization now has the capacity to serve over 600 care receivers, annually fulfilling nearly 8,000 requests and logging more than 100,000 trip miles to support healthy and independent living. This tremendous work could not have been achieved without the support of the Chur Foundation, and we are truly thankful for their investment in our mission.
